AirTel pre-paid GPRS Activation and usage

Update: AirTel has recently discontinued the SMS activation and deactivation service for GPRS/Mobile Office. You now need to call 56561, press 1 for English, press 1 to activate GPRS. It takes about 2 to 4 days to have GPRS activated, painfully slow. To deactivate GPRS or Mobile Office, call 56562, press 1 for English, press 1 to deactivate GPRS.

To activate, SMS “GPRSACT” to 511. AirTel will begin charging you Re 14.99/- per day. You will need to SMS “MO” (Mobile office?) to 501 for the precise settings for your phone (I did not get a response with settings as promised), or call their customer-service.

To deactivate, send “GPRSDEACT” to 511.

    Hey, i have been using airtel gprs from last 8 months, when it was previously Rs 5 per day. it was working fine till now.

    And from 15jan07 to feb25 around) it was giving really good browsing and download speed(5-7KB/sec). But from last week its really giving bad download speed(almost zeroKB/sec most of the time).also browsing is toooo slow.

    My Previous settings were(when download speed and browsing speed was goood)
    APN:airtelgprs.com
    IP address:202.056.231.117
    DNS:i didnt entered.its empty(0.0.0.0)
    use Proxy: no
    username:i gave my mob no
    password:0000

    But now since that ip address was giving problem( i was not able to connect to INternet acc. )
    so i kept ip address blank (that is, now my ip address is 0.0.0.0)

    but the browsing speed and download speed is very slow! Can someone help me.can someone give me new IP ADDRESS , if the previous IP ADDRESS is changed..

    There is nothing f0r free. Airtel provided the GPRS and Mobile office from same server earlier now they have found the loophole and separated both servers. Now The Free Internet is no longer available.
    Also its too costly to use Net @ 8KBPS for 300/- per month.
    If somebody still find some loophole visit my Home page and send mail to me.

    I have been using this service for a long time but I am not happy with the speeds.
    I use a Nokia 6020.. and by default, the connection speed is 115kbps., though I can change it to 230kbps.
    but the actual speeds I get is very low… only 2-3 KBytes per sec during peak hours.. and when I am lucky.. it goes up to 7-10kBps.. but its very rare..
    i wish i could get around 10KBps at all times.. then i would be happy

    For activating airtel gprs, send GPRS to 567 and u will be connected.. call 121 for help.. After activating it in phone and if u want to connect to pc , setup a new connection thru network connections.. the dialer no is either *99***1# or *99***2#
